In my workplace (I work in an ISP provider in Europe) we always encourage junior network engineers to follow a Cisco certification path, either through the Routing and Switching path or other important technology paths such as network security and VoIP. I have been in this industry for more than a decade and I firmly believe that in order to succeed in the networking professional career one must earn relevant professional certifications.

Cisco is one of the leader companies offering professional certifications, which are highly recognized in the industry as excellent qualifications for an employee. Earning a Cisco certification means that you have a good grasp of the technology and most importantly you are competent to design and implement Cisco solutions and products. The Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNA) certification is the entry level qualification and is very popular among junior engineers. To pass CCNA you need a high quality training and dedication towards your goal.

There are several training options available for CCNA preparation, such as self-study via books, instructor based training (boot camp style), video training, simulation exams etc. From my own experience when studying for my Cisco exams, and also from discussions with other certified colleagues, one of the best ways to study for CCNA is using a CCNA Video Training package. Especially when you combine a video training package with exam practice questions, you will have a complete preparation method for passing your exam. A video training package includes DVD quality videos with a real instructor teaching the course and guiding you through the exam objectives to help you pass.

The two best companies offering CCNA Video Training packages are Trainsignal and CBT Nuggets. Both training companies offer top-quality material and are very popular among technology professionals since they offer a wide range of vendor trainings (Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, VMWare etc). Especially for CCNA certification, the video training product from these two companies is an excellent choice. The two instructors (Chris Bryant for Trainsignal training and Jeremy Cioara for CBT Nuggets training) are highly experienced teachers who will help you tremendously to learn the CCNA material. Go ahead and check out those two training options and I’m sure you will not get disappointed.

Even if you select the Trainsignal CCNA option or the CBT Nuggets CCNA training option you will get top notch preparation for your CCNA Exam.

If you want to stay anonymous on the internet then one of the first lessons to learn is how to hide my IP address. The IP address is your address on the internet and can be easily tracked back to your computer. In fact a worrying development all over the world is for Governments to force ISPs to hold this information to build up a comprehensive web surfing record of all it’s citizens. This is already a Directive in the European Union and many countries are planning to create external databases with all this information for various agencies.

Personally I’m not at all impressed with this turn of events so I always surf anonymously. One lesson to learn is to make sure you hide your IP address from the web site you are visiting. This is fairly easily achieved and the simplest way is to sue an anonymous proxy, this server acts as a go between and fetches the web pages from the web server you are browsing. This means that only the proxy servers address appears in the web server logs and not your IP address.

Another added use of proxy servers is to bypass various content restrictions set by ISPs or Governments, for instance Turkey had banned many web sites after various legal cases – these include things like You Tube, Wordpress blogs and some religious or political sites. By using a proxy server you can bypass these restrictions as the web content is being served indirectly by the proxy server and not that nasty You Tube website!

It’s a great tool for free speech and bypassing countries which censor the internet – of which there are many more than you would imagine. My main caveat with using anonymous proxies is to make sure you know they are run well and safe, they are also commonly used as traps by identity thieves and hackers – who use them to intercept all your web traffic to steal data, account names and passwords. Unfortunately most anonymous proxies are extremely slow unless you pay for a private network.

If you want to read about some of my thoughts on using free anonymous proxies and how you can surf without being spied on, try the link below, from there you can also try out a demo of the most secure, sophisticated web browsing product available anywhere.

Try the new free demo of Identity Cloaker on the link below.

How many computers do you have at home? How many of those are in use? Do you have a number of computer users as well? One in the study, couple in the kid’s room, one for the kitchen, if you have more than two computers and computer users in your home then you may try networking all the computers.

What are the benefits of home networking?

• If connected to a network, files can be sent back and forth by each computer.

• You can play music and video files from another computer.

• You can access the printer and the scanner that is connected to one computer from any other computer that is within the network.

• You can avail of the best features of the computer with highest configuration.

• If one computer in the network serves as a server, then you can store important files as back up in the server.

• You can share one Internet account to reap its benefits from different computers at the same time.

• Imagine playing Age of Empires or racing cars with real opponents at different computers in the house!

Yes, networking allows you to have multi-player games.

So how do you get home networking?

Networking can be done by using a wireless networking connection or by an Ethernet cable. All you need for Ethernet networking are:

- Number of networking cables
- Networking cards
- A router

Once you have these, follow the following steps.

- Select the computers that you want to be in the network
- Install a networking card in each
- Connect a cable to each which will in turn be connected to the router
- The router will then be connected to the server
- The router will then be connected to the modem machine in order to enable internet access to all the machines
- Once the hardware connections are in place, set up internet in each computer by configuring the Local Area Network (LAN) settings
- Finally use the router manual to access the password and set up internet connection on each computer through the router

So what are the precautions that you need to take while connecting your home computers in a network?

First and foremost you need to realize that whatever data you have in each computer will be accessible by everybody.

So start by defining the rights to each drive and folder of your respective computers. Since people other than family members who sit on someone’s computer can also access the information in other computers, ideally only ‘read’ right should be given to folders and drives with sensitive information, so that someone else cannot copy, edit or delete such information.

You can even deny ‘read’ rights to folders if need be. Since you are connecting to the internet through your network, you must install a firewall for maximum security. Install anti-virus software on each computer.

Connecting home computers in a network is a good idea, helps in staying connected and also make full utilization of the facilities available in each computer. With a little bit of precaution, networking can only be fun!
