It is not always who you know, but what you know. That is why obtaining Microsoft certification can be a valuable asset to your career. Of course, it does depend on what career path you want to take as to whether you want to get either MCSE training or MCP training or anything else for that matter. So what do those abbreviations MCSE and MCP stand for anyway?

MCP stands for Microsoft Certified Professional and MCSE is an abbreviation for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. What exactly does having a Microsoft certification mean anyway? We know that it looks good on a resume and opens new doors in your career. Did you know that being certifiable – in Microsoft anyway – sometimes will also boost your pay? Experience counts for a lot, but having a Microsoft certification or two does not hurt either!

So what does it take to be and MCP or MCSE? Lots of studying! The MCP courses and MCP exams are geared toward a more rounded technical professional. Candidates for MCP must pass one current certification test from Microsoft. Passing one of the exams demonstrates that the candidate has a consistent level of technical expertise.

With the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer path, there are MCSE boot camps that help prepare candidates for the MCSE exams. These MCSE boot camps are intense classes often packed into a full two week period instead of the traditional weekly MCSE training classes in preparation for the MCSE exams. This path is more involved. MCSE certification is standard in the IT field and prepares you for anything from the design of a system’s infrastructure to analyzing the company’s needs before implementing a design.

Unlike those individuals who take the MCP training to prepare for MCP exams, students of MCSE have a course of study that is more intense. Instead of one test to prepare for, they have seven tests that they are required to pass to get their Microsoft certification. Yikes! Seven! They have five main exams to take as well as two electives. The five required MCSE exams are broken down into four operating system exams and one design exam. The two electives typically deal with other issues in design and implementation not covered in the five core tests.

After learning a few basics, it is easy to see that the MCP or Microsoft Certified Professional is really just a stepping stone to bigger and greater things in the world of Microsoft certification. The individuals who go for the MCP have a leg up on those peers who have no technical experience. They will have a better grasp on technical issues and usually stay a step ahead of trends. The MCSE is more specialized and appeals to the techno geek with a penchant for design and implementation. They like knowing how stuff works. So market yourself and become certifiable!

As you’re considering studying to get an MCSE, you’re probably in 1 of 2 situations. You might be ready to get into the IT environment, and your research tells you this commercial sector has a huge demand for qualified people. Or you possibly are someone with a certain amount of knowledge wanting to gain acknowledgement with the Microsoft qualification.

Take care to ensure you confirm that the training provider you’re using is educating you on the latest level of Microsoft development. Many trainees are left in a mess when they discover they’ve been educated in an outdated version which will need updating. Be on your guard for training colleges that are simply out to sell something. You should know that purchasing a course to qualify for an MCSE is similar to buying a car. They’re very diverse; some will serve you very well, whilst some will be completely unreliable. A good company will offer you plenty of help to check you’ve got the correct course. With those who have confidence in their programs, you will be able to look at examples of training materials before buying anything.

Many trainers provide a bunch of books and manuals. This can be very boring and isn’t the best way to go about remembering. Studies have constantly demonstrated that becoming involved with our studies, to utilise all our senses, is proven to produce longer-lasting and deeper memory retention.

Programs are now found on CD and DVD discs, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Video streaming means you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how to perform the required skill, and then practice yourself – in an interactive lab. Always insist on a demonstration of the study materials from the school that you’re considering. The materials should incorporate instructor videos, demonstrations, slide-shows and virtual practice lab’s for your new skills.

Choose disc based courseware (On CD or DVD) where possible. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

It’s so important to understand this key point: You absolutely must have proper 24×7 instructor support. Later, you’ll kick yourself if you let this one slide. Always avoid training that only supports you with an out-sourced call-centre message system outside of normal office hours. Trainers will always try to hide the importance of this issue. Essentially – you need support when you need support – not at times when they find it cheaper to provide it.

The best trainers incorporate three or four individual support centres around the globe in several time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to join them all seamlessly, at any time you choose, help is just a click away, with no hassle or contact issues. If you accept anything less than online 24×7 support, you’ll very quickly realise that you’ve made a mistake. You may not need it late in the night, but you’re bound to use weekends, early mornings or late evenings.

IT has become one of the more stimulating and innovative industries that you could be a part of. Being up close and personal with technology is to be a part of the massive changes affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. We’ve only just begun to see just how technology is going to shape our lives. The internet will significantly revolutionise the way we see and interact with the world as a whole over the coming years.

The typical IT technician in Great Britain has been shown to get much more money than equivalent professionals in other market sectors. Standard IT incomes are around the top of national league tables. It’s evident that we have a substantial UK-wide demand for professionally qualified IT workers. It follows that with the marketplace continuing to expand, it seems there will be for a good while yet.

An area that’s often missed by trainees mulling over a new direction is ‘training segmentation’. This basically means the breakdown of the materials for timed release to you, which can make a dramatic difference to how you end up. Delivery by courier of each element stage by stage, according to your exam schedule is the typical way that your program will arrive. While sounding logical, you might like to consider this: What would happen if you didn’t finish each and every module within the time limits imposed? And maybe you’ll find their order of completion doesn’t come as naturally as some other structure would for you.

For maximum flexibility and safety, it’s not unusual for students to make sure that every element of their training is posted to them in one go, with nothing held back. You can then decide in which order and at what speed you’d like to take your exams.

MCSE Certification – Still a Relevant Qualification
By Rachel Lawrence

The MCSE certification indicates you can work at a high standard on all several Windows servers up to and including the 2003 server. Although there are more recent systems and qualifications available, it shows that you can design, implement and administrate Information systems on these servers and can really boost your CV.

MCSE stands for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and the qualification has been around for several years now, meaning that most officials are aware of it. With the arrival of the new Microsoft MCITP qualifications many people believe that the MCSE is out of date, but this is not necessarily true.

The MCITP certification has arrived and does cover all the aspects of more recent Microsoft servers. On the other hand, while it is important to be up-to-date, it always takes a while for older technology to filter out of use and it does not look as though server 2003 is going to disappear any time soon and having a certification for this system can only be beneficial.

By no means is this an either/or situation. On the contrary, an extra certification can only help you. Starting out with the MCSE and then progressing to the MCITP will show that you have a broader understanding of your subject and the development of information systems. There are also MCSE 2008 upgrade courses available to show that you have that range of knowledge.

After all, it is better to be able to show a commitment to the career, and this certification might not be around forever. The broader your range of experience and qualification the better equipped you are. The MCSE certification can also help you gain CISSP or MCITP qualifications if you choose to expand on it.

In order to get an MCSE qualification there are seven exams you have to pass. This could seem like a lot of work but gaining MCSE certification does not need to take over your life. With user friendly computer based training available you can learn in your own time. These CBT courses are put together by experts as well, so you do not need to worry about the quality of what you are studying.

So, do not dismiss the MCSE qualification just yet. It will be useful for several years yet and still improves your CV.

To find more information on MCSE CBT options have a look at http://www.cvision.co.uk for expert training options.

Author: Jason Kendall

If you’re reading this it’s possible that either you’re considering a career change into IT and an MCSE certificate appeals to you, or you’re someone with a certain amount of knowledge and you know that you need a qualification such as MCSE.

As you discover more about training providers, avoid those that cut costs by failing to use the latest level of Microsoft development. Ultimately, this will mean the student has to pay much more due to the fact that they’ve been learning from an old version of MCSE which will need updating very quickly. Don’t use training companies that are simply out to sell something. Advisors should be helping to make sure you are on the best program for your needs. Resist being forced into some generic product by some pushy sales person.

Adding in the cost of exams with the course fee then including an exam guarantee is a popular marketing tool with a good many training companies. Consider the facts:

Certainly it’s not free – you’re still paying for it – the cost has just been rolled into the whole training package. Those who take exams one at a time, funding them one at a time are far more likely to pass first time. They’re mindful of the cost and revise more thoroughly to be ready for the task.

Shouldn’t you be looking to hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, not to pay any mark-up to the college, and to take it closer to home – instead of the remote centre that’s convenient only to the trainer? Buying a course that includes payments for exams (and if you’re financing your study there’ll be interest on that) is madness. Don’t line companies bank accounts with extra money of yours just to give them more interest! Some will be pinning their hopes on the fact that you don’t even take them all – so they don’t need to pay for them. The majority of organisations will insist that you take mock exams first and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve completely proven that you’re likely to pass – so an ‘Exam Guarantee’ comes with many clauses in reality.

Average exam fees were around the 112 pounds mark twelve months or so ago via UK VUE or Prometric centres. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to have ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when common sense dictates that what’s really needed is consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software.

Looking around, we find a glut of job availability in the IT industry. Picking the right one in this uncertainty can be very difficult. As in the absence of any previous experience in IT, how can most of us know what anyone doing a particular job actually does? The key to answering this dilemma correctly flows from a deep chat, covering several different topics:

* What nature of individual you think yourself to be – which things you enjoy doing, and conversely – what you definitely don’t enjoy.

* Are you driven to get certified due to a specific reason – i.e. are you pushing to work from home (maybe self-employment?)?

* Is salary further up on your wish list than other factors.

* Considering all that Information Technology encapsulates, it’s important to be able to take in what is different.

* You should also think long and hard about what kind of effort and commitment you’re going to give to your education.

The best way to avoid all the jargon and confusion, and find the most viable option for your success, have an informal chat with an industry expert and advisor; an individual that can impart the commercial reality whilst covering the certifications.

Students who consider this area of study can be very practical by nature, and aren’t really suited to the classroom environment, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this is putting you off studying, try the newer style of interactive study, where everything is presented via full motion video. Memory is vastly improved when multiple senses are involved – educational experts have expounded on this for many years.

Learning is now available in disc format, so everything is learned directly from your own PC. Video streaming means you will be able to see the instructor presenting exactly how it’s all done, and then have a go at it yourself – in a virtual lab environment. Always insist on a look at some courseware examples from any training college. You should ask for expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

It’s folly to select online only courseware. Because of the variable quality and reliability of most broadband providers, you should always obtain actual CD or DVD ROM’s.

Watch out that all qualifications that you’re considering are recognised by industry and are the most recent versions. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are usually worthless. From an employer’s perspective, only the big-boys such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco (for instance) will open the right doors. Anything less just doesn’t cut the mustard.

By Jason Kendall

If you’re reading this there’s a good chance that you’re about to make a move into the great world of IT and you’ve heard good things about MCSE’s, or you’re someone with a certain amount of knowledge and it’s apparent that your career is blocked until your get an MCSE.

We’d recommend you prove conclusively that your provider is actually training you on the latest level of Microsoft development. Many students are left in a mess when they discover they’ve been educated in an old version of MCSE which will have to be revised. A company’s mission statement should primarily be on the best thing for their clients, and the whole company should care about their results. Working towards an MCSE isn’t simply about qualifications – it should initially look at helping you to decide on the most valid way forward for you.

Don’t listen to any salesperson who pushes one particular program without a thorough investigation to assess your abilities as well as level of experience. Always check they have access to a expansive choice of training products so they can give you an appropriate solution. If you have a strong background, or maybe some real-world experience (some industry qualifications maybe?) then it’s more than likely the level you’ll need to start at will be different from a student that is completely new to the industry. If you’re a new trainee beginning IT exams and training as a new venture, it can be helpful to break yourself in gently, beginning with some basic user skills first. This can be built into most accreditation programs.

Many commercial training providers only give support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later; very few go late in the evening or at weekends. You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and phone support is often to a call-centre that will take the information and email an instructor – who’ll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, at a suitable time to them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re stuck and can’t continue and only have a specific time you can study.

We recommend looking for colleges that utilise many support facilities across multiple time-zones. Each one should be integrated to provide a single interface together with 24×7 access, when it’s convenient for you, without any problems. Never settle for less than you need and deserve. Online 24×7 support is the only kind to make the grade when it comes to technical study. Maybe burning the midnight-oil is not your thing; usually though, we’re working when traditional support if offered.

One interesting way that training companies make a lot more is via an ‘exam inclusive’ package and offering an exam guarantee. This sounds impressive, but is it really:

Everyone knows they’re still footing the bill for it – it’s obviously been added into the full cost of the package supplied by the course provider. It’s definitely not free (it’s just marketing companies think we’ll fall for anything they say!) For those who want to pass first time, then the most successful route is to fund each exam as you take it, give it the necessary attention and apply yourself as required.

Don’t you think it’s more sensible to not pay up-front, but when you take the exam, not to pay any mark-up to a training college, and to do it locally – instead of the remote centre that’s convenient only to the trainer? Considerable numbers of so-called credible training course providers make a great deal of profit because they’re getting paid for exam fees early then banking on the fact that many won’t be taken. Many training companies will insist on pre-tests and not allow you to re-take an exam until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

With average prices for VUE and Pro-metric exams coming in at around 112 pounds in the UK, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. Why splash out often many hundreds of pounds extra at the beginning of your training? Consistent and systematic learning, coupled with quality exam simulation software is what will really see you through.

Now, why is it better to gain commercial qualifications as opposed to more traditional academic qualifications obtained from tech’ colleges and universities? With 3 and 4 year academic degree costs becoming a tall order for many, plus the industry’s recognition that corporate based study often has more relevance in the commercial field, we have seen a great increase in CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA authorised training paths that educate students for considerably less. In a nutshell, only required knowledge is taught. Actually, it’s not quite as pared down as that, but the most important function is always to concentrate on the fundamentally important skill-sets (alongside some required background) – without going into too much detail in everything else (as degree courses are known to do).

The crux of the matter is this: Commercial IT certifications give employers exactly what they’re looking for – everything they need to know is in the title: i.e. I am a ‘Microsoft Certified Professional’ in ‘Designing Security for a Windows 2003 Network’. Consequently an employer can identify just what their needs are and which qualifications will be suitable to deal with those needs.

A web search using the words MCSE Courses turns up literally hundreds, if not thousands of search results. Everything from MCSE Boot camp which guarantees certification ready candidates in 16 days, to three week resort hotel-stay training regimes in India. Many online programs are also available—with self study materials. Many local or community colleges offer programs in MCSE certification.

In determining the best route for you as a potential MCSE certification applicant, it makes sense to review a number of different options for completing your MCSE courses. Factors such as available financing and cost, quality of the instructors and course materials, length of time required, self-study or group learning, and availability of job location assistance upon completion of the MCSE courses should be taken into consideration in determining the optimum plan of action.

Depending on your personal work situation, some companies may be prepared to assist employees to take MCSE courses during working hours or may be willing to finance or reimburse employees to gain certification on their own time. The benefits to the company are obvious—an employee is able to stay current in their field, job longevity is assured, and the employee feels more loyalty to the company. Find more info at http://www.mcsecourses4u.info

Even if you have decided to go the MCSE courses alone—it is wise to get the advice of an IT professional as to the best way to approach your goal. Establish a mentoring relationship with someone who is willing to provide advice and perhaps even some technical, hands-on experience. Self-study is important in that much work once in the field is done by an individual, but MCSE professionals also work in an environment where people are involved, so learning to work with people can be critical in successfully utilizing the formal MCSE courses in order to effectively accomplish required tasks in the working world.

By: Jason Kendall

Are you toying with the idea of doing an MCSE? If the answer’s ‘yes’, there’s a good chance that you’ll fall into one of two camps: You could already be in IT and you’d like to gain accreditation with an MCSE. Alternatively this could be your first step into commercial IT, and you’ve discovered there’s lots of demand for people with the right qualifications.

When researching training companies, make it a policy to stay away from those who reduce their out-goings by failing to use the latest Microsoft version. This is no use to the trainee their knowledge will be of an out-of-date syllabus which doesn’t correspond to the present exams, so they’ll probably fail. Don’t use training companies that are just interested in your money. Advisors should be helping to ensure you’re on the right course for you. Resist being forced into a standard product by a second-rate college.

Consider the points below in detail if you’re inclined to think that old marketing ploy of examination guarantees seems like a good idea:

They’ve allowed costings for it by some means. One thing’s for sure – it isn’t free – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole. If you want to get a first time pass, then you should pay for one exam at a time, prioritise it appropriately and apply yourself as required.

Doesn’t it make more sense to go for the best offer at the time, not to pay any mark-up to a training company, and to do it locally – instead of the remote centre that’s convenient only to the trainer? Big margins are secured by some training companies that incorporate exam fees into the cost of the course. For various reasons, many students don’t take their exams but no refunds are given. Amazingly, there are training companies who depend on students not taking their exams – and that’s how they increase their profits. It’s worth noting that exam re-takes via training course providers who offer an ‘Exam Guarantee’ are monitored with tight restrictions. You’ll be required to sit pre-tests until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass.

Splashing out often many hundreds of pounds extra on an ‘Exam Guarantee’ is foolish – when study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will get you through.

You should look for authorised exam simulation and preparation programs included in the package you choose. As most examination boards in IT are from the USA, you need to become familiar with their phraseology. It’s no use simply going through the right questions – it’s essential that you can cope with them in the proper exam format. Be sure to have some simulated exam questions so you can check your understanding at any point. Practice or ‘mock’ exams add to your knowledge bank – so you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

Many trainers provide a bunch of books and manuals. This isn’t very interesting and not a very good way of remembering. Memory is vastly improved when we use multiple senses – learning experts have been saying this for many years.

Learning is now available in the form of CD and DVD ROM’s, so you can study at your own computer. Using video-streaming, you can watch instructors demonstrating how something is done, with some practice time to follow – via the interactive virtual lab’s. Be sure to get a look at some courseware examples from any training college. The materials should incorporate expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and lab’s for you to practice your skills in.

You should avoid purely online training. Physical CD or DVD ROM materials are preferable where available, so you can use them wherever and whenever you want – you don’t want to be reliant on a good broadband connection all the time.

The market provides a plethora of jobs and positions available in Information Technology. Arriving at the correct choice for you often proves challenging. Reading a list of odd-sounding and meaningless job titles is no use whatsoever. The majority of us don’t really appreciate what the neighbours do for a living – so we’re in the dark as to the complexities of a new IT role. To attack this, there should be a discussion of a variety of unique issues:

Your hobbies and interests – these can point towards what possibilities will give you the most reward.

Are you driven to re-train for a specific raison d’etre – e.g. do you aim to work at home (maybe self-employment?)?

Is your income higher on your priority-scale than anything else.

With so many markets to choose from in computing – it’s wise to get a solid grounding on what differentiates them.

Taking a cold, hard look at how much time and effort you can give.

For the average person, getting to the bottom of these areas will require meeting with a professional who can explain things properly. And not just the certifications – but also the commercial requirements also.

Earning An MCSE Certification Is No Simple Task!
by kingweb
As an IT professional, you understand all too well the importance of certifications. Obtaining a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certification is definitely a positive move for your career. MCSE is a Microsoft-specific certification that proves your knowledge and abilities in the design and implementation of the network infrastructure for businesses. The MCSE certification requires the IT professional to successfully pass seven exams. No wonder it ’s considered one of Microsoft ’s Premier Certifications.

In today ’s highly competitive IT market, advancing your education is very important. The fact that you are rising above other IT professionals to keep your competitive edge does not go unnoticed. Business owners looking for a self-motivated engineer to fill a position in their company often look for current certifications. Microsoft offers a wide variety of Microsoft Certified Professional certifications. Microsoft ’s certifications carry a lot of influence with business owners. Whatever Microsoft certification you’re pursuing, you won’t be disappointed by the results after you add your certification to your resume.

Earning an MCSE certification is no simple task. This fact, paired with the demand for corporate level IT professionals, makes an MCSE a very valuable certification to acquire.

Your MCSE may be on Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2000, Windows NT4.0 or Windows 2000. MCSE training is most appropriate for those already in a professional IT field. Systems engineers, technical support engineers, systems analysts, network analysts and technical consultants would already be familiar with the basic framework in a business’ infrastructure. IT professionals who have experience are already be familiar with some of the subject matter on the exams and would have the ability to put real-world experience to the test. Related work experience gives you the edge over someone who isn’t as familiar with design and implementation of a network infrastructure.

After you have achieved the MCSE certification on the operating system of your choice, you will have the opportunity to pick a specialty to further set yourself apart from your peers. MCSE specializations are a way for IT professionals to more easily identify their focus in a particular field. You may choose to specialize in messaging or security with any MCSE certification you acquire. Business owners often require an employee with specific specialization in security. An MCSE: Security would let potential employers know you are MCSE certified with a focus on security.

Many websites offer reading material, study guides and even free practice tests to help you prepare for your MCSE exam. Microsoft often offers a free second-chance test if you don’t pass the exam the first time. Many professionals require a second chance, so don’t let a first-exam failure deter you from reaching your goal.

The seven examinations leading up to certification consist of four on networking, one on client operations, one on design and one elective. The elective examination is of your choice and ranges from servers to security. Upon completion of the exams, you will receive your MCSE Certificate, a wallet card, a lapel pin and a few other bonus gifts from Microsoft. Students passing the examination can download their transcripts through the exclusive MCP member website. You will reap the benefits of the real reward when you’ve added your MCSE certification to your resume and negotiated a higher salary or landed a new job.

In addition to your certificate and other gifts from Microsoft, you will receive great deals on industry-specific magazines, websites and MCP-only databases. Through the MCP member website, you can access Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online. The magazine has been regarded as one of the industry ’s leading career and professional development magazines. Regular online chats with other Microsoft professionals will keep you in the loop and help further your education and career.
About the Author

Types Of MCSE Training That Is Available
by William Campbell
Today even more than ever MCSE training is becoming a by word for excellence in the world of IT. As it is growing ever more important for employees to be proficient in the use of technology products such as those produced by Microsoft who are one of the most dominant of all so there has been a rise in the types of training that is available. Below we will look at a number of different types of MCSE training that is now available.

1. Traditional Classroom Training

All the instructors who carry out this type of training are likely to be MCSE certified and may also be qualified as a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT). With this type of training you will find that the course follows the Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC), but all students will also have access to the necessary Microsoft servers and system software that will be covered once they reach exam stage. Often classes can last for either 3 to 5 days or may last for several months. Generally the costs for these type of MCSE training courses range from about $400 and go up to as much as $5,000. But this cost will depend on what subjects are actually covered during the training as well as how long the course lasts for and finally what level of expertise the instructor has.

2. MCSE Labs

These encourage an hands on approach in relation to knowledge of the systems and applications which will be covered during an MCSE exam. Often many IT professionals will either use the equipment at their office or build a small network at home in order that they can understand the key points, as well as to practice concepts and material that they will be tested on when they eventually take the MCSE exam. Plus as there are online MCSE labs this is extremely cost effective as you do not need to buy the equipment yourself. All you do need is an IE browser so that you can experience particular Microsoft environments in order that you will know what is necessary to pass your MCSE exams. In most cases you will find that an online MCSE lab costs from about $100 and goes up to about $500 and this cost will depend on the subjects that you are covering and the length of the lab.

3. MCSE Online Courses

Many people find it much better to use this particular type of training as it can be found usually either a downloadable or streaming media. These particular courses attempt to cover the subjects by using multi-media presentation which includes slideshows, flowcharts and images in order to cover the material of the course. There are even some of the courses now being presented by MCSE certified trainers. As these courses are self paced you decide when you use them so that they can fit into your already hectic and busy schedule. Such an MCSE training course will cost between $100 and $500 to do, again it depends on the subjects that are being covered during the course and the actual time the course takes to complete.
